DESCRIPTION:[:fr]Commissaire :  Catherine Bédard\n\nVernissage le 6 juin

uit Blanche\n\nSpanning the border between Canada and the United States\,
making it disappear within its colossal\, flowing expanse\, the Great Lake
s basin is home to millions of people\, including Indigenous peoples from
numerous First Nations in Canada and American tribes. An extraordinary sou
rce of surface drinking water\, among the largest in the world\; a place o
 f movement and exchange\, commerce\, work\, leisure\, travel\, and meditat

basin has been observed from the diversity of its shores by Robert Burley
\, one of the most important Canadian photographers of our time.\n\nHere\,
the artist creates a body of work as unique as it is exceptional\, where
the grandiose beauty of this elusive expanse—at times soothing\, at time
s unsettling - evolves into a reflection on the power of the contemporary
image. Stripped of all distractions\, restoring the Great Lakes to their o
riginal grandeur\, Robert Burley’s photographs beckon the viewer like en
 chanting sirens.\n\nIn partnership with Biinaagami\,  Swim Drink Fish\, a

SUMMARY:Les Maîtres du sol
fillette. Est-ce un esclave\, un prince\, un guerrier ? Et quel est le mo
tif de son intérêt pour Efua ? Les réponses à ces questions se situent
  à l’issue d’un long voyage jusqu’à Tombouctou.
r invites you to a meeting with Canadian author Ryad Assani-Razaki to mark
the French release of the novel Les Maîtres du sol\, published by Liana
Levi.\n\nAn ambitious and romantic epic\, Les Maîtres du sol explores a f
ascinating yet little-known chapter in African history..\n\nIt was just a
small fishing village on the Gulf of Guinea at the end of the 15th century
. Yet the Portuguese chose it as a base from which to reach sub-Saharan Af
rica and settle there. The villagers were utterly astonished\, for the ski
n of these men—who had come in search of gold—was translucent\, and th
eir language indecipherable. Little by little\, under pressure from the
“white devils\,” ancient beliefs begin to waver\, and customs fade awa
 y. Everything changes—except for the custom that requires the disposal o
f children born with deformities\, such as little Efua. Yet a mysterious m
an\, who recently arrived in the village\, takes an interest in the girl.
Is he a slave\, a prince\, or a warrior? And what is the reason for his in
terest in Efua? The answers to these questions lie at the end of a long jo
urney to Timbuktu. There\, too\, some are questioning the ancient beliefs.
Dazzled by the Arabs’ knowledge\, they want to impose the religion of A
llah—which has come from the East—on the powerful Songhai Empire\, at
the risk of upsetting an ancestral balance…\n\nBorn in 1981 in Cotonou\,
Benin\, Ryad Assani-Razaki lives in Toronto. In 2010\, he won the Trilliu
m Award for his collection of short stories\, Deux cercles. He is also the
author of La Main d’Iman\, which won the Robert-Cliche Award for Best F
irst Novel in 2011.\n\nThe event will be hosted by Lize Veyrard\, editoria
l director of contemporary literature for the Folio series and will be fol
lowed by a book signing and sale.[:]

amment humaines. Enfin\, Three Pieces for String Quartet (2016) de Michael

he Bozzini Quartet comprises Clemens Merkel on violin\; Alissa Cheung on v
iolin\; Stéphanie Bozzini on viola\; and Isabelle Bozzini on cello. It is
one of Canada’s most renowned ensembles in the field of contemporary mu
sic.\n\nRecognised for its refined interpretation and its commitment to to
day’s composers\, it has been performing works that push the boundaries
of the string quartet for over twenty-five years. Praised for its ‘inten
se musicality and immense sensitivity’ (Musicworks\, Canada)\, the Bozzi
ni Quartet has been described in Bandcamp Daily as “one of the most dari
ng string quartets in the world”.\n\nFor this concert at the Cultural Ce
ntre\, the Bozzini Quartet offers a journey through four soundscapes inspi
red by the natural world: birds\, animals\, the movement of water and the
echoes of life.\n\nBringing together works by three Canadian composers –
Alissa Cheung\, Linda Smith and Cassandra Miller – as well as Canadian
composer Michael Oesterle\, this programme also celebrates a history of de
ep friendships and artistic collaborations that have spanned more than twe
nty years.\n\nIn Du nord (2020)\, Alissa Cheung translates the solidarity
of migrating snow geese into the quartet’s ensemble playing\, drawing in
spiration from a painting by Jean-Paul Riopelle. Linda Smith’s Gondola (
2007) evokes the gentle rocking of the water and its ripples. In Warblewor
k (2011)\, Cassandra Miller brings to life the songs of four species of th
rush\, revealing\, beneath their apparent strangeness\, surprisingly human
melodies. Finally\, Michael Oesterle’s Three Pieces for String Quartet
(2016) draws us into a musical journey inspired by endangered animals.\n\n
