Martin BruneauTout ce que je n’ai toujours pas compris…
October 22nd, 2010 - December 10th, 2010
Martin Bruneau invites us to enter the world of the studio, the place where the thought that is materialized in painting is produced.
Having worked for many years on all the signs constituting the vocabulary of painting, particularly that of great masters such as Velázquez, Van Dyck, Rubens and Goya, this artist of Canadian origin living in Autun seeks to understand the line of thought leading to the elaboration of a canvas as the construction of an idea. Referring to Las Meninas by Vélazquez, including Courbet’s deer or covering part of the canvas in a style reminiscent of that of Rothko or Gerhard Richter, Martin Bruneau emphasizes the free play of associations in the production of meaning, which is subject more to chance, to the unpredictable than to logic.
The exhibition features various paintings produced since 2006, surrounded by the preparatory sketches and notes that were used in their making. Several large paintings – including one of the two canvases produced for the Abbaye de Maubuisson centre for contemporary art in 2008 – will be presented on the floor, as if to accentuate the impression of visiting the artist’s studio. We will thus walk through his studio to understand better his line of thought. Every last one of these works has been strongly influenced by American abstract expressionism and pop art, inviting us – not without humour – to revisit the richness of the classics.
