The CCC invites you on an exciting journey in the footsteps of the great Arctic expeditions of the 19th century, to mark the publishing of For Glory, Not Gold: Expeditions through Arctic Lands 1818-1876 (Editions Flammarion) by the author, Hubert Sagnières, Canadian traveler and collector.
Illustrated with numerous exceptional and previously unpublished engravings, maps and illustrations from the period, this handsome book presents ten major Arctic expeditions led by courageous explorers between 1818 and 1876. From Sir William Edward Parry to Sir John Franklin, via the Frenchman Joseph-René Bellot, each of these adventures is recounted in the own words of those who braved the ice and the unknown in search of the coveted Northwest Passage. These sometimes dramatic tales take the reader into the day-to-day reality of exploring the Great North, so much dreamed of as feared.
In 1991, Hubert Sagnières, then head of a major French industrial group, moved to Canada. Fascinated by the Far North, he and his explorer friend Mike Beedell carried out more than twenty winter polar expeditions in the Canadian Arctic. After his first book, Daring French Explorations published by Flammarion in 2023, Hubert Sagnières has decided to share his knowledge of the Far North, his travel diaries, unpublished drawings and maps from his unique collection, and his love for the people of the Arctic in a new book.
