Immerse yourself in a little-known musical heritage with “Notre passé composé”, a recital dedicated to French-Canadian melodies from the turn of the 20th century. Baritone Laurent Deleuil and pianist Pierre-André Doucet breathe new life into forgotten works, unearthed from the archives and composed by Lavallée, Contant, Fortier, Descarries and many other composers whose legacy deserves to be heard once more. Through these pieces, inspired as much by the great French poets as by the founding voices of Quebec literature, the artists reveal the full richness of a musical tradition that has long remained in the shadows.

Laurent Deleuil — baritone

The French-Canadian baritone Laurent Deleuil made his debut at the Opéra National du Rhin, whilst at the opera studio, in the title role of Britten’s opera Owen Wingrave. He settled in Paris in 2013 to join the Académie de l’Opéra Comique, during which time he sang in the children’s versions of Delibes’s Lakmé and Lecoq’s Ali Baba (roles: Frédérik and Ali Baba), as well as in recitals of French mélodies. Laurent Deleuil holds a Master’s degree in opera from the Amsterdam Conservatory, which he completed after an initial Master’s degree in piano at the University of Montreal. He is a prize-winner in several national and international competitions, and was named a Génération Spedidam artist (2018) and a Jeune Ambassadeur Lyrique (2020).

Pierre-André Doucet — piano

A pianist, writer and cultural worker, Pierre-André Doucet is a leading figure of the new generation of Canadian artists. Praised for “the emotion of his playing and his impeccable control” (Audiophilia), he has performed in every province of Canada, as well as in South Africa, the United States and Europe. Pierre-André Doucet holds a PhD in piano performance from the University of Montreal, where he has also been a visiting professor, as well as a Graduate Diploma in Performance in piano accompaniment from McGill University.
