Sophie Lukacs
Centre culturel canadien
June 09th, 2026
20:00 - 21:30
A Canadian originally from Budapest and based in Montreal, Sophie Lukacs is one of the few women in the world to have mastered the kora, the iconic 21-string harp-lute of West Africa. After seven years of training in Bamako under the tutelage of the master Toumani Diabaté, she has developed a unique musical language that weaves together Mandinka tradition and contemporary song.
Her album *Bamako* (Disques Nuits d’Afrique, 2023) earned her the Best World Music Album award at the 2024 Canadian Folk Music Awards. She has performed on international stages, notably at the Saint-Louis Jazz Festival (Senegal), Africa Oyé (Liverpool) and Nuits d’Afrique (Montreal).
For this concert at the Canadian Cultural Centre, Sophie Lukacs is accompanied by three exceptional musicians: Cheick Niang on guitar, Noel Mpiaza on percussion and vocals, and Laszlo Koos on bass. Together, they take us on a musical journey between Bamako and Budapest, between tradition and modernity, sung in French, English, Bambara and Hungarian.
