The Canadian Cultural Centre is pleased to present the exhibition Vancouverism: Westcoast Architecture and City-Building. Curated by Trevor Boddy, this exhibition focuses on the urban transformation of one of North America’s most dynamic and creative cities. Over the last fifty years, the architectural innovations of the Canadian West Coast have given birth to “Vancouverism”, an urban design movement characteristic of this legendary city. From the United-States to the Middle East, architects and urban planners now speak of “Vancouverizing” their metropolises by incorporating a combination of high-density residential spaces, high quality public services and a deep dedication to sustainability, creating architectural hybrids unique to the world.

The exhibition features architectural drawings, detailed models, photographs, a video installation and the construction of the impressive roof of the Speed Skating Oval for the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. This boldly-designed structure, made of timber from British Columbia’s sustainable forests, demonstrates cutting-edge engineering applied towards ecological objectives and the renewal of a significant and endangered industry.

Above all, Vancouverism demonstrates how, from Dallas to Dubai, the creative city-building ideas of one of North America’s most avant-garde cities, influence urban development on an international scale.

Vancouverism will be presented in various European cities throughout 2008-2009.
