Strange & Familiar: Architecture on Fogo Island

The Canadian Cultural Centre invites you to the screening of the film Strange & Familiar: Architecture on Fogo Island by Marcia Connolly and Katherine Knight.

The artists’ studios designed by Canadian architect Todd Saunders, perched like sculptures on the rocky shore of Fogo Island off the coast of Newfoundland, have received an enthusiastic response from architecture enthusiasts around the globe. The four buildings, as well as the brand-new Fogo Island Inn, have since been featured in publications including the New York Times Magazine, Wallpaper and architecture magazine Domus. The visual striking studios are located in an equally striking natural setting: the hilly subarctic landscape of Fogo Island. The alliance of cutting-edge design and wild surroundings puts a contemporary frame on an ancient landscape.

Lavishly filmed by Marcia Connolly and Katherine Knight, the documentary Strange & Familiar: Architecture on Fogo Island uses a visual narrative of the construction of the Fogo Island Inn, inviting us to discover the portrait of a small island trying to assert itself by choosing bold contemporary architecture.
