Richard Cœur de Lion – Opéra de Versailles

To mark the 250th anniversary of the famous French opéra comique Richard Cœur de Lion by Gréty (1784), Canadian stage director Marshall Pynkoski (Art Director of the Opera Atelier in Toronto) revives it within the grand history of Versailles.

While Gréty was Marie-Antoinette’s favourite composer, his “Richard” not only constitutes the apex of his career but also forecasts an artistic style that would bloom into Romanticism and bears the powerful historical mark of a period coming to an end.
