Semaine du cinéma étranger
March 10th, 2014 - March 15th, 2014 20:00 - 22:00
Founded on the initiative of the Forum des Instituts Culturels Étrangers à Paris (FICEP), this first edition of the Semaine du Cinéma Étranger is intended to be a look at the diversity of cinematographic production in 16 foreign cultural centres and institutes in Paris.
The year 2014 will be marked by commemorations of the centennial of the First World War and the Normandy landings in 1944. In this important context for the collective memory, the Semaine du Cinéma Étranger has chosen for its theme “love in the time of war”.
While the programming takes into account the diversity of conflicts that have touched the participating countries, it also shows how similar the human and interpersonal issues that preoccupy the various directors are. Repertory films or more recent ones from various continents are testimonies to the theme of love and more generally to our humanity in times of war.
Archangel dir. Guy Maddin – Wednesday, March 12, 8 p.m. – Institut Finlandais, Paris
As part of the programming of the first edition of the Semaine du Cinéma Étranger, the Canadian Cultural Centre presents the film Archangel, one of the underappreciated masterpieces by the Canadian director Guy Maddin.
1917, Arkhangelsk: the Russian city is enshrouded with frost during the First World War. Mustard gas has deadened the memories of the soldiers who forget to stop fights, forget to sleep, forget that they are dead. They only remember one thing: to love. Without even remembering whom. Archangel is an intensely poetic baroque film in which tragedy and comedy blend in a remarkable manner.
