As part of its 50th anniversary, the Canadian Cultural Centre launches a brand new schedule of virtual encounters with Canadian artists. Once a month, in connection with an event, a project or an important theme that the Canadian Cultural Centre wishes to highlight, each artist introduces themselves from their daily space of thought, creation and work. An unprecedented invitation of about thirty minutes, without editing, into the private space of a studio.

A few days before the commemoration of the Normandy Landings, and to remember the sacrifices and heroism of the Allied forces,  join us on June 3 at 7pm for a Facebook Watch Event and an exclusive encounter with Canadian artist, photographer and videomaker Bertrand Carrière. He will talk about the Jubilee and Caux projects he directed in Dieppe between 2002 and 2004.

The artist will tell us about the Dieppe Raid of July 1942, the involvement of Canadian soldiers, and more broadly about his way of engaging through photography in a relationship of recollection of the people and places that have united Canadians with France during the two world wars.

Biography:
Bertrand Carrière is a photographer and video artist. He teaches photography at the Université de Sherbrooke. Born in Ottawa en 1957, he lives and works in Longueuil, Québec and in the Eastern Townships. His work is represented by The Stephen Bulger Gallery in Toronto and Galerie Simon Blais in Montreal.
Bertrand Carrière’s work is anchored on one hand in a documentary approach, the memory and history of places and, on the other hand, in a more intimate approach of the life around him, highlighting the irregularities and poetical ambiguities of the visible world. The artist has produced important bodies of work in France, for example Jubilee: Dieppe (2002) and Caux: Dieppe (2003-2004), both focussing on the Second World War, and Lieux Mêmes (2005- 2009), a project aimed at finding traces that the First World War left on the territory in France and Belgium.
The works of Bertrand Carrière can be found in many private and public collections, including the National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa), the Musée national des Beaux-Arts du Québec, the Canadian Centre for Architecture (Montréal),  the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, the Bibliothèque nationale de France (Paris), the Cinémathèque québécoise (Montreal), the Cirque du Soleil and the McCord Museum (Montreal).
