Caroline Monnet’s Ikwewak exhibition offers a series of six photographs featuring First Nations women who free themselves from the European historical gaze by reworking their biased representation in the collective consciousness.
Ikwewak is part of a series of photographic and video works presenting Indigenous women in their splendor, eccentricity, elegance, pride and charisma. The current generation wants to positively transpose itself into the future, relying on tradition, while taking a more important place in society.
Born to an Anishinaabe mother and a French father, Caroline Monnet lives and works in Montreal.
This exhibition is presented as part of the programming of the Canada Pavilion at the Village de la Francophonie from October 2 to 6, 2024 at the CentQuatre in Paris, a place for cultural exchanges and discoveries on the sidelines of the 19th Francophonie Summit.
