Literature and chocolate : a conversation between Kim Thúy and Tareq Hadhad
Centre culturel canadien
May 22nd, 2019
19:00 - 21:00
As part of celebrations marking the 40th anniversary of the Private Sponsorship of Refugees Program, the Embassy of Canada in France invites you to a poignant exchange between renowned author Kim Thúy and entrepreneur Tareq Hadhad, both former refugees who built new lives in Canada.
Kim Thúy was welcomed to the small town of Granby, Quebec in 1978, after fleeing Vietnam with her family as a 10 year old child. A lawyer and internationally acclaimed novelist, she is known for candid stories about being a refugee and immigrant, told with warmth and humour. Kim is the author of 5 books based on her personal experience, including Secrets from My Vietnamese Kitchen, Kim’s first cookbook sharing recipes from her native country.
In 2015, Nova Scotians from the community of Antigonish mobilized to welcome Tareq Hadhad and his family, natives of Syria. Founder and CEO of Peace by Chocolate, Tareq is a passionate entrepreneur and tireless advocate for peace, recognized as the recipient of Start Up Canada’s National Newcomer Entrepreneur Award and selected as Google’s National Hero Case for 2018. Under his leadership, Peace by Chocolate has made concrete commitments to support refugee employment and business development in Canada.
