Mathieu Malouf
Infinite Regress : Important Paintings 1997 – 2018
Le Consortium
November 24th, 2018 - April 14th, 2019
Curator : Stéphanie Moisdon
For his first solo exhibition at an institution, Mathieu Malouf, (b. 1984 in Montreal, lives and works in New York) presents a group of paintings and sculptures retracing the last five years of his production as well as a series of new pieces made specifically for Le Consortium.
Devoid of any agenda or strategy other than pushing forward as far as possible concepts of identity or subjectivity and the logic of official or mainstream art, Mathieu Malouf’s astonishingly prolific and compulsive body of work cannibalizes and unspools its own subjects, whether critical or political, public or private figures. His portraits, often painted in large formats where various male psychopaths frequently coexist, Kim Jong Un, Donald Trump or the Grinch among them, are marked by the violence of failure, celebrity or vanity, hysteria or egomaniacal delusions.
