From September 17 to October 29, 2021, The Film Gallery in Paris presents “The Secret of the Milky Moonfrocks“, the first Parisian exhibition of the collages of Canadian director Guy Maddin.

This exhibition is accompanied by a retrospective of his films with 8 feature-length film screenings and 2 short film screenings at the Cinéma l’Archipel, from September 17 to 26 in the presence of Guy Maddin.

The exhibition “The Secret of the Milky Moonfrocks” presents 25 collages by the Canadian director, among which the motifs that are dear to him and that his cinema deploys: the notion of strangeness, the history of representations and the construction of sexual bodies, and post-war North American visual fabrics.

The plastic practice of collage can sometimes take a performative form for Guy Maddin, when he creates his collages during seances. At other times, it allows new narratives to emerge: the collages are then the premise of script ideas, or constitute the starting material for storyboards.

“The Secret of the Milky Moonfrocks” at the Film Gallery and the retrospective at the Cinéma L’Archipel are produced with the support of the Canadian Cultural Centre in Paris.
