Cinéma du Réel – 44th International Documentary Film Festival
Two Canadian films in competition

Each year, Cinéma du réel explores documentary cinema, questioning its forms, evolutions and ways of making films. For its 44th edition, the lineup of the International Documentary Film Festival questions the space of struggle, that of affirmation and claim.

This year, two Canadian documentaries are selected in the “International Competition” category of the Festival Cinéma du réel! 

• Huahua’s Dazzling World and its Myriad Temptations, Daphne Xu (2022)

Huahua, an eccentric and exuberant woman from Xiongan New Area, livestreams herself dancing, singing, and chatting with fans for a living. Cell phone screens, beauty filters, and digital soundscapes reveal a world that Huahua creates with her own image.

• Anyox, Ryan Ermacora and Jessica Johnson (2022)

The film depicts the lives of the two sole residents of an abandoned company town in northwest British Columbia, while unfolding a complex labour history and revealing the vestiges of environmental degradation. Combining large format cinematography and an inquiry into archival records, it interlaces past and present.

Both films will be screened in the presence of the directors.
