20:00 - 21:45
On March 28 at 8pm, the Canadian Cultural Centre invites you to a special evening dedicated to the Dieppe Canadian Film Festival, with the screening of Caroline Monnet’s film Bootlegger, followed by a conversation with the director moderated by journalist Zoé Courtois.
For her first feature film, Algonquin-French multidisciplinary artist Caroline Monnet hits hard by tackling a sensitive subject debated in many Indigenous communities in Canada: their self-determination.
Mani, a master’s student, returns to the northern region of Quebec, in the community where she grew up. Determined to reintegrate it, she becomes involved in the debate over a referendum on the free sale of alcohol.
Laura, a bootlegger, pockets the profits under the protection of the band council and Raymond, her husband. Raymond is still angry with Mani, whom he blames for the death of his daughter in a fire. Mani and Laura, two radically opposed women, divide the community into two clans with their own vision of independance.
