The Centre Pompidou in Paris is part of the international celebration marking the centenary of the birth of Canadian artist Jean Paul Riopelle (1923-2002). A major figure of gestural abstraction with an international reputation, Jean Paul Riopelle was intimately involved with the Paris art scene from 1947, the date of his first visit to the capital, which he made his adopted home for 40 years of his life.
From December 15, 2023 to April 1st, 2024, the Centre Pompidou (Level 5, Room 36) will be presenting three major paintings by Riopelle held by the museum, as well as several works from private collections.
Jean Paul Riopelle
Jean Paul Riopelle, born in Montreal on 7 October 1923 and died on 12 March 2002, was a Canadian painter, printmaker and sculptor. From his birthplace, Montreal, to his forty years or so in France, Riopelle’s artistic and cultural legacy spans the four corners of the globe.
