The Espace culturel inuit, in collaboration with the Canadian Cultural Centre, invites you to France Rivet‘s conference: In the footsteps of Abraham Ulrikab, The tragic story of two Inuit families from Labrador exhibited in 19th century ethnographic shows.

In the Footsteps of Abraham Ulrikab relates the tragic story of two Inuit families from Labrador displayed in the ethnological exhibitions of the nineteenth century. In September 1880, two Inuit families from Labrador arrived in Europe to be the new attractions of the ethnological exhibitions of Carl Hagenbeck. The eight individuals were exhibited in Hamburg, Berlin, Prague, Frankfurt, Darmstadt, Crefeld, and at the Jardin d’Acclimatation in Paris. The Inuit soon realized that they had made a mistake and just wanted to go home. Unfortunately, none of them saw their native land again. All died of smallpox less than four months after arriving in Europe.

Since 2010, the researcher France Rivet has been investigated the story of these Inuit. What she found highlighted an opportunity to change the course of their history: the wish expressed by the Inuit to return to Labrador could have become a reality.
