French and Canadian artist Michèle Waquant is also a professor at the art schools in Dijon and Cergy Pontoise. Her multidisciplinary practice (video, photography, painting, drawing and writing) is characterized by her commitment to social and environmental causes, and to her sensitivity to the major issues facing today’s world. An accomplished, prize-winning videomaker, she has produced several films and video installations including L’Observatoire, presented at the Canadian Cultural Centre in 2003–04.

Shown at the Montreal International Festival of Films on Art and at the Marseille Festival of Documentary Film, her latest film, Le Dit du Saule, is the tale of destruction as told by an ornithology enthusiast. An extract from Discours aux animaux (“Speech to the Animals”) by author and playwright Valère Novarina is read by warm male voice listing 1,111 invented bird names. As for the image, a weeping willow slowly loses its branches. The film will be screened here with other recent short films in the presence of the author. This event has been organized in partnership with the cultural monthly Transfuge, which focuses on contemporary literature and cinema.
