February 09th, 2012
The Espace Culturel Inuit presents Observer les baleines : Pourquoi ? Comment ?, a lecture by Olivier Adam, a bioacoustician specializing in whales.
In 2009 the International Whaling Commission suggested that certain species of whale could be used as indicators in predictive models for global warming. Several international scientific programmes to better understand and better protect marine mammals are currently underway. This lecture will present different observational methods and give an overview of current knowledge of certain species, particularly those of the Arctic.
Olivier Adam is a professor at the Université Pierre et Marie Curie and a member of the bioacoustics team at the Université Paris Sud Orsay; he specializes in the analysis of sounds emitted by cetaceans. He is currently taking part in a census of species of cetaceans living near Guadeloupe, in a programme counting Antarctic blue whales around the Crozet Islands (French Southern and Antarctic Lands) and on a project analyzing humpback whale songs (Madagascar).
