November 16th, 2011
19:00 - 20:30
The Canadian Cultural Centre presents, in collaboration with the Délégation Générale du Québec, a reading with the Innu poet Rita Mestokosho.
A trilingual reading – in Innu by Rita Mestokosho, in French by the actress Anny Romand and in English by the actress Alexandra Stewart – of extracts from the collection of poems eshi uapataman nukum / comment je perçois la vie, grand-mère / how i see life, grandmother, published by Beijbom Books.
Rita Mestokosho was born in 1967, on the north-eastern shore of the Saint Lawrence in the Innu community of Ekuanitshit (Mingan) in Quebec, where she still lives. A member of the Innu Council, she develops cultural and educational projects and is also dedicated to the conservation of nature and in particular of the river, La Romaine. She is inspired by the nature surrounding her and by her grandmother to whom she dedicated her collection of poems, Comment je perçois la vie, grand-mère.
Jean Marie Gustave Le Clézio paid homage to her by citing her in his Nobel Prize for Literature Acceptance speech in 2008. Rita Mestokosho will also be a guest at the event Viens lire au Louvre as part of the J.M.G Le Clézio cycle at the museum.
