Jeu de Paume – Paris

Part of the Satellite 7 programme, curated by Nata?a Petre?in-Bachelez

The Canadian artist Kapwani Kiwanga has studied anthropology and comparative religion, and works with video, sound and performance. In her films and series of readings-performances Afrogalactica, she speaks of the “transcendent powers, beings and realms” that she invented while playing the role of a 22nd-century anthropologist.

These performances are accompanied by a discourse that places her artistic practice in the context of the wider debates surrounding astroculture, Afrofuturism, magic and the cultural theory of space.
