For the Inuit, the pack ice was an ice route during migrations from Alaska to Greenland through the Canadian Arctic. Even today, the fast ice is still used for travel, fishing, hunting and remains a space for identity, knowledge transmission, games and meetings. However, the boreal ice pack is shrinking in area and thickness, affecting the most traditional activities of the Inuit and modifying their environment, while promoting the economic and industrial development of the Arctic.
This conference-slideshow is hosted by Pierre Taverniers, meteorologist, active member of the Inuksuk association, member of the GDR “Polar mutations” and author of the guide La banquise (ed. l’Escargot Savant, 2013).
