Focus on contemporary Inuit art

Complementing the exhibition Fantastic Kenojuak Ashevak, exceptionally open for the European Night of the Museums 2013, a focus on contemporary Inuit art with the screening of two documentaries on the indispensable and prolific artistic community of Cape Dorset.

This documentary was filmed during the celebrations of the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the renowned Inuit artistic cooperative of Cape Dorset, also known as Kinngait Studio. It tells the story of the founding and remarkable blooming of this community of artists, which led to the emergence of contemporary Inuit art throughout the world. Featuring interviews with the artists Kenojuak Ashevak, Shuvinai Ashoona, Ohotaq Mikkigak, Tim Pitsiulak, Annie Pootoogook and Pitaloosie Saila.

Annie Pootoogook was born, grew up and lives in Cape Dorset. This documentary is an intimate portrait of a major figure of contemporary Inuit art. Annie Pootoogook describes her use of drawing techniques and the way her everyday experiences in the Canadian Arctic inspired her creative process and shaped her identity as an Inuit artist.
