La cartomancie du territoire is a theatrical and videographic creation about our relationship with Indigenous and nature reserves, about the colonization of territory and thought. Don’t miss this performance by Quebec company Hôtel-Motel on Monday, April 17, 2023 at 8pm at the Canadian Cultural Centre.
In 2015, author and director Philippe Ducros went to meet various First Nations and Inuit communities in Quebec. These visits made him measure the uprooting and the ravages of colonialism.
La cartomancie du territoire is a summary of his research. Composed of testimonials and intimate and political reflections, this work takes the form of a road trip through the heart of the Canadian winter, mixing theatre, song, music and video.
Through the history and reality of Indigenous peoples and Inuit, this piece attempts to see our own colonization, the one we impose on ourselves as individuals and as a nation, the one we impose on the territory that inhabits us and defines our common destiny.
Would it be possible to learn from them, to see how they have survived, how they decolonise themselves, how they reinvent paradigms for our modernity?
The show premiered in March 2018 at Espace Libre in Montreal. The staging revolves around the imposing presence of images of Quebec territory filmed in the winter of 2018 by filmmaker Éli Laliberté, who has been working at the heart of First Nations realities for twenty years. The result is a scenic object that flirts with video art and contemporary installation.
