A sound immersion into the biodiversity of Saturna Island

Immerse yourself into the Wetland Project, a multidisciplinary exploration of an environmental soundscape. Let yourself be transported into the biodiversity of a tiny sliver of our planet Earth, the ṮEḴTEḴSEN marsh in unceded W̱SÁNEĆ territory (Saturna Island, British Columbia), and listen to the sounds that emanate from it. A unique immersive sound and colour experience presented at the Canadian Cultural Centre from April 22 to May 20, 2023.

For ten years, this “more-than-human” soundscape featuring birds, frogs, insects and airplanes has been investigated by artists Brady Marks, Mark Timmings and musicologist Stephen Morris. It is a sensory project on the biodiversity of wetlands and their animals, their wealth threatened by climate change. 

Over the years, the Wetland Project has taken the form of slow radio broadcasts, new media installations, an artists’ book, as well as the illuminated score of the marsh’s sound recordings, the Wetland Senario and its interpretation. The presentation in France brings together all iterations of the Wetland Project for the first time to amplify and re-enchant our relationship with the natural world.
