For International Women’s Day on March 8, 2023, the Canadian Cultural Centre and Afropolitain Nomade are pleased to present the collective Les so(u)rcières in partnership with the Canada Council for the Arts, the Canadian Commission for UNESCO and the Centre Culturel de la Maison des Camerounais de France.

Through a short documentary, a musical performance and a discussion, this evening will be an opportunity to address different themes such as violence against women, the place of women in the music industry, emancipation, and the influence of territory on creation.

Under the co-artistic direction of Gaelle Wondje and Fredy Massamba, the collective Les so(u)rcières is the result of a meeting of Andréanne Martin, Nadine Altounji (Canada), Mahoussi Kotche, Danielle Eog Makedah and Becky Beh (Cameroon). Together, they have produced a work based on their experiences as women, artists and citizens of the world.

The collective Les so(u)rcières offers a hybrid music, rooted in the different origins and backgrounds of the artists who make it up. Between jazz, blues and soul, they mix influences of traditional music from Benin, Cameroon and Syria. They sing in French, English and the languages of Cameroon, Congo and Benin.

The result of this collaboration was first presented in June 2022 in Douala, Cameroon, as part of the 9th edition of the Festival Afropolitain Nomade directed by Vanessa Kanga (Veeby), a Cameroonian-Canadian artist.
